Thousands of Vietnamese fled their country by boat. Many made it into Hong Kong territoral waters where they were detained pending forced repatriation.
In 1992 following massive preparations by the UNHCR, all of the Cambodian Refugees living in camps in Thailand were repatriated back to their country. There under UNTAC the refugees were given money and housing so that the could set up new lives.
Thousands of refugees have fled over the border from Burma into Thailand. Many have spent years in camps in an area rife with malaria and dengue fever. Others have had to build their own homes out of bamboo and leaves in areas designated by Thai authorities.
